Minister of Public Works Urges Chinese Company to Strengthen Security on Third Ring Road

PHNOM PENH: The Minister of Public Works, Senior Minister Sun Chanthol, has requested the Shanghai Construction Group to strengthen security on the third ring road, especially at the road's corner, in order avoid accidents when the road is opened to the public.

The third ring road connecting Kob Srov Dam Road from National Road No. 4 to National Road No. 3, No. 2, No. 21, No. 21A and Provincial Road 110, is scheduled to be completed in May 2023.

Speaking to the media while inspecting the progress of the Third Ring Road's construction on Tuesday afternoon, 28 February 2023, Senior Minister Sun Chanthol said that his inspection has revealed that the road is being built in accordance with the set standards that will ensure durability. However, the inspection also brought certain problems to light, hence, he has requested the construction company to implement an additional safety system.

"At the crossroads, the right traffic lights [will be installed] to avoid traffic accidents, but where the road is narrow, there is no traffic light, and another suggestion I have is to plant flowers or low trees in the middle of the road," he said. "We should plant flowers or trees here because it is a two-way road and drivers [may be dazzled by the headlights of cars coming in the other direction], so if we plant [this divider], the drivers will not be dazzled. We are discussing how to address these issues."

The Third Ring Road (from National Road No. 4-National Road No. 1) will be about 53 kilometers long, and is being built with a construction budget of approximately US $267 million. Construction started on 14 January 2019 and is scheduled to complete on 5 September 2023.

According to Senior Minister Sun Chanthol, this road is very important because it diverts unnecessary traffic out of the city and connects to many important locations, including the new Phnom Penh International Airport and the new Phnom Penh Autonomous Port.
